THE YOUTH CREW PROGRAM
In 1998, Captain Jim Gladson and Alice Robinson, co-founders of the Los Angeles Maritime Institute, created a youth crew volunteer program. Recognizing that young men and women relate best to others in their age group, they established this vital component of LAMI’s mission.
Youth who have participated in the TopSail Youth Program, either with their school, Scout, Guide, church or other young people’s organization, are invited to return on weekends or “after hours” to develop their skills and nourish the sense of empowerment that they first discovered aboard ship. We also welcome those from the community we serve even if they were not previously involved in the formal programs. A schedule of instruction and “hands on” participation in sailing one of LAMI’s “tall ships” is offered on a regular basis. As members of the youth crew, youth are able to develop their maritime skills, and are invited to return as volunteer crew for weekend day sails and even longer voyages.
To provide a forum where youth can continue to overcome the challenges they face daily as they encounter life’s changes.
To provide an environment for critical thinking and decision making while empowering Youth for success in School and Life.
All youth who demonstrate the need and keen interest in expanding their empowerment as a Youth Volunteer Mentor in the TopSail Program are welcome.
The Youth Crew Program is designed to:
A. Expand horizons by providing opportunities;
B. Develop vital decision making skills;
C. Instill a sense of responsibility;
D. Encourage resourcefulness;
E. Develop problem solving capabilities;
F. Promote self-motivated leadership;
G. Demonstrate the value and power of teamwork;
H. Develop organizational skills;
K. Focus on the importance of education in their future;
L. Develop sailing skills;
M. Develop safety awareness;
N. Provide an introduction to the maritime industry as an option for career development.
||Los Angeles Maritime Institute uses sail training to provide youth with real-life challenges that develop knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to live healthy, productive lives. Our award-winning TopSail Youth Program takes place aboard the twin brigantines, Exy Johnson and Irving Johnson, the Official Tall Ships and Maritime Ambassadors of the City of Los Angeles.
