LAMI: COVID-19 Update Doing Our Part to Flatten the Curve

Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI) prides itself on prioritizing safety in every aspect of delivering once-in-a-lifetime educational adventures to young people at sea aboard our sailing tall ships. One of the essential lessons working at sea teaches us is to be prepared for any unknown circumstance and to quickly respond to, adjust for, and solve the matter at hand.Discovering the ocean aboard a tall ship is a rite of passage for LAMI Topsail Youth Program sailors

The COVID-19 outbreak is no different.

From its onset, LAMI staff and crew have diligently executed our good health and hygiene protocols to ensure our ships and workplaces are safe. We are also committed to doing our part to support our communities and in reducing the rate of infection by adhering to the local, state, and federal emergency recommendations and mandates.

But the negative impacts to LAMI from taking these measures are unprecedented and are now forcing the organization to make drastic budgetary cuts. A week ago, LAMI’s tall ships were fully booked for the start of our busy season beginning in March and poised for substantial growth with the official launch of our Long Beach-based tall ship, the American Pride. But by today, every one of those scheduled educational sails has been canceled or postponed due to the closures of school districts and the restrictions on travel and events.

As a direct service nonprofit that relies on the revenue of paid events and programs to cover operations and the no-cost programs offered to underserved youth, LAMI’s financial situation is dire.

Fremont Elementary on American Pride and Sponsored by Marathon Petroleum. We are continuously assessing the situation and intend to maintain a skeleton crew to resume delivering exceptional education and sailing adventure to our youth when the circumstances improve. We remain committed to underserved youth and are creating virtual ways to provide our educational and exploratory programs via video. We will get through this challenging time and are excited to book future experiential programs and extraordinary summer camp voyages for schools and youth groups.

But our ability to weather this storm depends on our supporters.

Please help keep the wind in our sails by donating to LAMI today. Give our area youth a once-in-a-lifetime sailing and learning adventure to look forward to.

Thank you.
